COURSE OVERVIEW:

The Nursing in Minimal Access Surgery Training Course is a hands-on programm designed to equip nurses and theatre technicians with the practical knowledge and clinical skills required to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality care during minimal access surgery (MAS) procedures. Through expert-led instruction, simulation-based training, and live theatre exposure, participants will gain confidence in equipment handling, patient safety, perioperative nursing, and multidisciplinary teamwork essential for successful minimally invasive surgery.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of minimal access surgery and the vital role of nursing in delivering safe perioperative care.
  • Set up, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain essential minimal access surgery equipment, including insufflators, camera systems, energy devices, and trocars.
  • Apply best practices for sterilization, equipment preparation, and infection prevention in minimal access surgery.
  • Perform scrub nurse responsibilities confidently, including instrument handling, maintaining sterility, and supporting the surgical team.
  • Carry out circulating nurse duties effectively, including patient positioning, gas management, and preparation for conversion to open surgery when necessary.
  • Recognize and prevent patient safety risks associated with minimal access surgery, including pneumoperitoneum-related complications and positioning injuries.
  • Apply meticulous counting procedures to minimize the risk of retained surgical items.
  • Strengthen teamwork, communication, and coordination within the minimal access surgery theatre environment.
  • Build technical confidence through simulation labs, dry labs, and live operating theatre observation.
  • Improve patient outcomes through enhanced nursing practice, reduced complications, increased theatre efficiency, faster patient recovery, and safer surgical care.
