Course Overview
The Quality and Patient Safety Symposium Workshop is a 2-day hybrid training program designed to strengthen safer surgical systems by moving teams from compliance-based practice to a culture of safety. It brings together surgical, anesthesia, nursing, theatre, quality, and hospital leadership teams to learn practical approaches to improving outcomes across the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative phases.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the modern concepts of surgical quality, patient safety, and high-reliability surgical care.
- Identify common causes of adverse events and never events in surgical practice.
- Apply the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist effectively as a team-based safety tool.
- Improve communication, briefing, debriefing, and teamwork in the operating room.
- Use key quality indicators, audits, dashboards, and incident reporting systems to monitor performance.
- Conduct effective morbidity and mortality reviews and root cause analysis after complications.
- Strengthen pre-operative safety through patient selection, optimization, infection prevention, and checklist use.
- Promote intra-operative safety through safe anesthesia practices, crisis management, and proper theatre conduct.
- Enhance post-operative safety through early recovery measures, complication detection, and follow-up systems.
- Develop practical quality improvement actions that reduce complications, readmissions, and failure to rescue.
